What had seemed like a quiet off-day quickly turned dramatic when New York Rangers coach Alain Vigneault revealed that forward Derek Stepan, laid out by an unpenalized blindside hit from Prust two minutes 45 seconds into the game, had suffered a broken jaw that needed surgery. Three hours later, Rangers agitator Dan Carcillo was suspended 10 games for physical abuse of an official on a play that came minutes after the Prust hit, as New York looked for retribution. The Carcillo incident came 5:51 into Thursdays game after a fight between Derek Dorsett of the Rangers and Prust. Carcillo, a fourth-liner, had been penalized for charging Prust on the play. The league said Carcillo "physically applied force to linesman Scott Driscoll while being escorted to the penalty box." The suspension was automatic under category 2 of Rule 40.3, titled Physical Abuse of Officials. Prust, meanwhile, was handed a two-game suspension for interference for the Stepan hit later Friday. It has added more drama to a series that saw Montreals all-world goalie Carey Price sent to the sidelines in Game 1 after coming out the worst for wear in a collision with six-foot-three, 230-pound Ranger Chris Kreider. For Vigneault, the missed Prust call Thursday set off a domino effect whose ripples were still being felt the next day. "Four referees missed the call," Vigneault said. "Stepan is injured. The same player that called the hit on Price accidental but on purpose. Late hit, everything that you want to get out of the game, that was his hit on Stepan. "And what saddens me about that hit is, if the call is made on the ice, were on a five-minute power play, and what happened to Dan Carcillo, and what Dan did is inexcusable, and hes going to pay a big price for it, but if the call is made on the ice, hes not put in that position. "So its unfortunate. Step (Stepan) right now at this time is probably getting operated on. He broke his jaw (Thursday), so well have an idea of the time frame (Saturday). But those are stuff that happens during the game that you have to deal with, and thats what were going to try to do." Dressed in jeans and flip-flops, Vigneault looked like he was in relaxation mode. But he was clearly irate at a sequence of events which he believes could have been avoided. Stepan went briefly to the dressing room after the hit, yelling over his shoulder at Prust as he exited. But he returned later in the period and amazingly played a total of 17:45 in the game. A team spokesman said X-rays that night were negative. But Stepan was in pain and saw a specialist Friday, when further tests detected the broken jaw. It seems unlikely that Stepan, who centres Rick Nash and Kreider on the Rangers top line, will be back any time soon. New York leads the series to two games to one. "My equipment is still in the same bag," he said. Even when the 49-year-old plays with friends once or twice a week, Hasek plays as a defenceman. Forty years as a goalie was enough. And its unlikely the man nicknamed "The Dominator" can capture the kind of performances that made him one of the best goaltenders in his era, alongside Patrick Roy and Martin Brodeur. Hasek played his final NHL game five years ago, and then officially retired in 2012. Its taken time since he left the league for his true place in NHL history to come into focus. Six Vezina Trophies as the leagues best goaltender, two Hart Trophies as MVP, one Olympic gold medal, six first-team all-star selections and two Stanley Cups -- one as a starter -- dont even tell the whole story. Few goalies during the 1990s and 2000s could do what Hasek did to opponents. "He mentally and physically intimidated you," said St. Louis Blues coach Ken Hitchcock, who beat Hasek in the 1999 Cup final with the Stars. "I think there were games that you knew you were never going to score on him, and I think it was very discouraging at times. I think thats a great quality. Id never seen the guy quit on a puck, Id never seen the guy give up on anything. And thats hard to play against." Haseks .922 save percentage is the best of any goalie since the league started keeping track in 1982-83. His 2.02 goals-against average is the best in the modern era, slightly lower than Ken Dryden and Brodeur. "Sometimes you win, sometimes you come close and you dont win it the whole way. It was an unfortunate night for us, it was something disappointing, but for me it wasnt end of my life." Far from it. Hasek proved much more than that, something that will more than likely be validated with induction to the Hockey Hall of Fame in November. "For me its a no-brainer," Ruff said. "I think he definitely stands as one of the best. He was on the cutting edge of the way a lot of goaltenders play. Always looking for a way to be better. He could take a team a long ways with the way he played." Hasek isnt carrying teams anymore, instead living back home in the Czech Republic and working "a little bit" in hockey and also in business. As much as hed appreciate it, making the Hall of Fame was never his goal, and thats not his focus even now. "There are new goals in life and always something new to prove. The hockey career is something what is behind me," Hasek said. "What great years, what fantastic things to do something what you enjoy, what you love to do, and be very well paid and be around the people who you love and spend great time with them. However its part of the life that every professional player has to retire some day, and you wake up and you enjoy your life different ways." What was wrong, he continued, was the consistency level of the group, the work ethic, the competitiveness, the inability to win one-on-one battles, a one-and-done rush attack that was not conducive to success (and needed more cycling and offensive zone time), and lastly, a defensive game "that we feel needs the most attention paid to it." "We feel that this group can score goals," he said, "but the defending of our net has been an issue." Fast-forward exactly two years to the day and Carlyles Leafs look very much the same. Rarely have they resembled the feisty, physical group he imagined, still an inconsistent, high-risk, defensively-challenged product most nights. Its been equal parts frustrating and befuddling for the Sudbury native, who has managed to find reason for optimism on only the rarest of occasions this season. There were close-matched games against Boston, a December loss to the Kings and a rousing swing through the challenging California triangle, but more often than not it was inconsistency – from shift to shift, period to period, game to game. It was a house of cards he feared was doomed to collapse and eventually did. Carlyle saw the omen in October when his team won 10 games on the strength of terrific goaltending, a scorching Phil Kessel and superior special teams. "We didnt want to get too excited and we didnt want to get too hard on individuals because winning is what its all about," he said before the 11th loss in 13 games on Thursday night. "A wins a win, youre not going to critique it." But still he worried even as his team picked up 11 victories in 14 games before the Olympics – mostly on the strength of Kessel and Jonathan Bernier. Carlyle and his coaching staff even designated a weeks worth of practice during the extended break in February to tighten up defensive-zone coverage. But the message didnt stick and the troubles continued. Team defence remained at the heart of this teams troubles all year – cushioned last season with a superb penalty kill. Carlyle was supposed to help change that. He was the man charged with bringing order and structure to a team that favoured Ron Wilsons high-risk, high-reward brand. But even with elite-level goaltending from Bernier – something Wilson only had for 30 or so games of James Reimers initial rise to the NHL – Carlyles team has actually been worse at goal prevention this season than Wilson in his final full season behind the bench – 2.99 goals per game in 2010-11 versus 3.09 in 2013-14. In question for Nonis and new team president Brendan Shanahan is how much of those troubles lie at the feet of Carlyle – his system, player usage and preferred style of play – and how much are tied to a flawed roster, one ill fit to play his bruising, aggressive style. Preferring a nastier edge to his teams, Carlyle wants them to grind, cycle pucks down low and be an enduring physical presence in the offensive zone. Weve got to do what were told and weve got to do a better job of executing [the system] at the end of the day. "Its our defensive zone that needs work in my mind," he continued. "As a group of five we have to do a better job of shutting things down and we have such a good offence that thatll take care of itself. If we just put more focus on our defensive zone play, sticking to the system, doing what were told and executing I think well be better at the end of the day." That execution was spotty from day one – they gave up 37 shots to Montreal in the opener, a sign of things to come. And despite constant drum-beating and daily direction, Carlyle could not affect change and remains befuddled as to why.
